"Moana 2" sails past $1 billion. Reddit stock hits record.

Good morning. Welcome back to the newsletter that keeps you warmer than NYC’s weather right now—not that it’s hard. Temperatures are crashing below 20 degrees this week. While it’s colder than usual, at least it’s not 1934 cold. Back then, NYC hit a record -15°F. Wherever you are in the US, may you find warmth… or at least a good excuse to stay inside.
Meanwhile, over in D.C., the new president is officially in office. We’re here with popcorn in hand, watching the tables turn. Buckle up—it’s going to be a show.
Today’s topics:
Chinese astronauts achieve artificial photosynthesis in orbit
AI now detects breast cancer better than doctors
Earth’s orbit is turning into a cosmic dumpster
Snow, ice, and chaos in Texas and Florida
Davos 2025 is in full swing
and more…

Stocks ended Tuesday on a high note, with Wall Street cheering President Trump’s return to office and his rapid-fire executive orders, some of which could shake up the economy and businesses.
The Dow rose 1.2%, the S&P 500 added 0.9%, and the Nasdaq gained 0.6%. This rally built on last week’s strong momentum when the Dow and S&P 500 delivered their best performances since the post-election excitement in November. Seems like the markets love a little political drama.

Bitcoin Takes a Breather
Bitcoin slipped to $103K on Tuesday after hitting record highs over $109K. Traders were hoping Trump would drop some pro-crypto executive orders on day one, but instead, he focused on TikTok, trade, and energy.

Reddit rises: stock hits record. Reddit shares shot up 7% to a record $191 on Tuesday after Raymond James decided the platform is worth even more, raising their price target to $200. All because Reddit is going global—and they’re serious about it. The plan is to use AI to translate posts into languages like Portuguese and Spanish so they can rake in ad money from the U.K., India, Brazil, and beyond. Ad sales already jumped 68% last quarter, so the money machine is working.
Trump’s meme coin takes off, because of course it does. Trump’s new crypto token, $TRUMP, exploded in value on Monday, hitting a market cap of $10 billion. Launched Friday night, it shot from under $10 to $74.59 before cooling down to $33.88. Ethics experts are already raising eyebrows, but apparently, the market is too busy cashing in to care. Meanwhile, another Trump-linked project, World Liberty Financial, raised $300 million in its token sale and is already planning more. With Trump back in office, crypto enthusiasts are calling it the start of a “golden age” for digital currencies. Critics might call it something else entirely.
Davos 2025. Davos is in full swing, and Trump is all anyone’s talking about. Some CEOs are pumped about fewer rules and more energy, while others are freaking out over tariff-driven inflation. China, India, and key European leaders skipped the event, but Trump will still make a virtual appearance on Thursday. Until then, it’s four days of big talk, bigger egos, and plenty of nervous chatter.

China Figures Out How to Make Oxygen in Space
Chinese astronauts just pulled off artificial photosynthesis in orbit—basically making oxygen and rocket fuel ingredients out of carbon dioxide and water. No plants needed, just some fancy tech. This is a game-changer for long-term space exploration. Hauling oxygen for long missions is expensive and impractical, so making it onsite could keep astronauts alive and spaceships fueled for the long haul.

AI outdoes doctors in breast cancer detection. AI is now spotting breast cancer better than humans. In a study of 500,000 women in Germany, it found one extra case per 1,000 mammograms—without freaking out with false alarms. Doctors are impressed, saying AI is at least as good as they are, maybe better. Guess the robots aren’t just here to steal jobs—they’re here to save lives too.
Scientists beg UN to clean up space junk. Earth’s orbit is turning into a cosmic dumpster, and scientists want the UN to step in. With a 17% jump in close satellite calls last year and thousands of new satellites clogging low Earth orbit, space is getting dangerously crowded. Experts from NASA, the University of Plymouth, and others are pushing to add space protection to the UN's sustainable development goals. They argue that as satellites die, they turn into debris that can smash into other objects, creating even more junk. “Space isn’t infinite anymore,” says Melissa Quinn from Slingshot Aerospace. Translation: clean it up before we’re trapped under our own floating trash.

Southern Snowpocalypse
The South is freezing over. Frigid air swept in Monday, bringing snow, ice, and chaos to places like Texas and Florida—regions that usually see more sunburns than snowstorms. Residents scrambled to wrap pipes, fix heaters, and hoard supplies like it was the apocalypse, southern style.
