Trump wants to end daylight saving time
$450 sushi. Bitcoin hits 107K. SoftBank's $100B investment in US.
Good Morning. It’s December 17th—just a week until Christmas, so if you're still pretending to be on top of your holiday shopping, we see you. And if you're daydreaming of a white Christmas, you’re not alone. With the U.S. experiencing the coldest start to December in over a decade, many are hoping for snow. But the reality is, if you haven’t seen snow yet, you're probably not getting any before the holidays.
By the way, on this day in 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright took their first successful sustained flight near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. So, the next time you complain about your delayed flight, just remember: these guys were literally flying with a box of wood and fabric. Perspective.

The Nasdaq hit a new high, thanks to a tech rally, while the Dow continued its losing streak, dropping for the eighth day straight—its longest slump since 2018. The Nasdaq rose 1.24%, fueled by Apple, Alphabet, Tesla, and Broadcom, with the latter up 11% after hitting a $1 trillion market cap. Meanwhile, the S&P 500 also reached new heights, driven by tech and consumer stocks.

Bitcoin Hits $107K
Bitcoin hit a new record above $107K on Monday, with investors banking on a rate cut from the Fed later this week. It’s up almost 3%, sitting pretty at $106,126.74. Ether followed suit, breaking the $4,000 mark. The crypto market’s loving it, while the Fed’s big decision is just background noise.

MicroStrategy stock rises after big Bitcoin buy and Nasdaq 100 addition. MicroStrategy stock jumped nearly 5% on Monday after the company announced it had bought 15,350 more bitcoins for $1.5 billion. The software firm, now the biggest corporate holder of bitcoin with 440,000 coins, also celebrated its upcoming addition to the Nasdaq 100.
Broadcom is having its "Nvidia moment". Broadcom’s stock is on fire, up another 8.6% Monday morning after a record-breaking 24.4% surge on Friday. That rally added $206 billion to its market cap, making it one of the largest one-day gains in U.S. history. With a "sharp new product ramp" expected in 2025, Broadcom is on track for its best month ever, up 50% in December alone. Looks like it's gearing up for its own "Nvidia moment."
Sushi master Keiji Nakazawa brings $450 sushi to NYC. Keiji Nakazawa, the sushi genius behind some of Tokyo’s toughest reservations, quietly opened Sushi Sho in Manhattan this March. Despite being the man behind sushi counters in Tokyo, Honolulu, and Los Angeles, his NYC spot has flown under the radar—except for the price tag. But if you’re ready to drop $450 for a rotating selection of appetizers and nigiri, you’re in for a treat.
Trump and SoftBank promise $100 billion U.S. investment. President-elect Donald Trump and SoftBank CEO Masayoshi Son just announced a $100 billion investment in the U.S. over the next four years, with plans to create 100,000 jobs focused on AI and infrastructure. Trump called it a show of "monumental confidence" in America’s future, though he jokingly urged Son to bump it to $200 billion. Son laughed and said he’d “try.” This $100 billion pledge, made at a flashy Mar-a-Lago event, echoes a similar 2016 promise, and fits into Trump’s plan to boost the U.S. economy and fight inflation during his second term.
Apple Ditches Broadcom, Goes Full DIY with New Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Chips
Apple's done relying on Broadcom—starting in 2025, its custom Proxima chips will take over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth duties in future devices. Proxima has been in the works for years, and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company will handle production.
This move is all part of Apple’s bigger plan to cut ties with third-party suppliers. Along with Proxima, Apple is developing its own cellular modem chips to replace Qualcomm, and it’s even working on a server chip to handle AI processing, cutting back on Nvidia’s pricey chips.

Trump Wants to End Daylight Saving Time
President-elect Donald Trump is ready to toss daylight saving time out the window. In a post on his social media, he said his party would push to eliminate the practice, calling it “inconvenient” and “costly.” Daylight saving time, first introduced during WWII, is meant to make better use of daylight, but it’s always been a topic of debate. Lawmakers have tried to get rid of it, with the latest attempt being the stalled Sunshine Protection Act, which wanted to make daylight saving time permanent.

US obesity rates drop for the first time in a decade. Obesity rates in the U.S. dropped slightly for the first time in over a decade, from 46% in 2022 to 45.6% in 2023. It’s a small dip, but hey, progress is progress. Experts think weight loss meds like semaglutide might be helping, though we’re still waiting on confirmation that they’re the magic fix.
